You can upload existing video or audio to Panopto through Canvas (canvas.emerson.edu) or through the Panopto Web Portal (panopto.emerson.edu). These two options are functionally the same; choose whichever method is most convenient for you. You may embed videos in Canvas regardless of which option you used to upload.
Note: When you are recording a video using Panopto Capture or Panopto for Mac, videos are uploaded at the end of recording (see Step 6: Video Upload and Processing of How to Create a Video Using Panopto Capture or Step 6: Manage Recordings of How to Record with Panopto for Mac).
Where Should You Upload Your Video/Audio?
Before you begin (and after compressing your video if needed), you must decide where you will upload your video/audio.
This is your personal Panopto folder, and the videos in it remain private until you embed them in Canvas or change their sharing settings. If you're unsure where to upload, we recommend My Folder because your videos will stay private until you choose to embed or share them. Also, if you upload videos to My Folder and then embed them in Canvas, you won't need to manually move the videos when you teach a new version of the course. Embedded videos are included in content imported from previous Canvas courses.
This folder will have the same name as your course and is best used for temporary videos you won't need to use in future courses. Students can access this folder and view available videos by simply clicking the Panopto link in the Canvas course's left-hand menu. By default, students CAN view but CANNOT upload or download from this folder. Upload to this folder if you want your students to immediately have access to your videos in the Panopto section of the Canvas course, without you needing to share or embed them.
If you wish to allow students to upload video (or audio) to the Course Folder, see this guide.
NOTE: If you teach the same course in a later semester and import your previous Canvas content, you'll need to move your videos to the new Course Folder. You can avoid this step by instead uploading to My Folder and embedding your video/audio in your course.
If you're teaching one of the fully online courses created during ITG's 14-week "Teaching Online" training, please upload it to the folder ITG created for you during that training. You can find it inside the greyed-out "Online Courses" folder. It will be called "[course #] - [last name]."
NOTE: If a folder appears but is greyed-out, it means that you don't have access to that folder's contents, but you DO have access to a subfolder within it. Click the arrow to the left of the greyed-out folder to expand it and see folders to which you have access.
Upload in Canvas
The following steps explain how to upload videos in the Panopto section of Canvas. (Alternatively, you may also use the Panopto Embed button above any Canvas text-entry box to upload videos.)
-
Go to your Canvas course and click on Panopto in the left-hand course menu. This will open your Course Folder.
-
Click the title of the folder to the right of the grey folder icon (it will be your course's name). This reveals a dropdown menu of folders to which you have access. Click on the folder to which you want to upload (see "Where Should You Upload Your Video/Audio?" for assistance).
-
Click Create and select Upload media. It will prompt you to upload a video/audio file.
You completed uploading your video or audio to the folder you specified! It will take a few minutes to process before becoming viewable.
- If you uploaded to My Folder or a custom folder, you can now either embed the video/audio in a Canvas page, assignment, or discussion or share its link.
- If you uploaded to the Course Folder, you can direct students to click the Panopto link in your Canvas course's left-hand menu to access that folder and view available video/audio.
Upload With the Panopto Embed Button
You may also upload video/audio in Canvas directly from the Panopto Embed button.
-
In Canvas, click Panopto Embed () above any text-entry box.
-
In the window that appears, select the folder to which you wish to upload (see "Where Should You Upload Your Video/Audio?" above) from the dropdown menu. Click the Upload tab, then drag-and-drop your video or audio file from your computer into the window, or click Choose video or audio files to browse your computer's files.
-
Click Insert at the bottom right of the window, and the video or audio will appear in the text-entry box. Save the page to finish. You finished uploading and embedding your video or audio! All students will automatically have permission to view it by going to the Canvas page you put it on.
Upload in the Panopto Web Portal
- Go to Panopto and log in with your Emerson account. This will open to My Folder.
-
If you want to upload to My Folder (which we recommend), move on to step 3. If you want to upload to a different folder, click Browse in the lefthand menu to navigate folders. Click on the folder to which you'd like to upload (see "Where Should You Upload Your Video/Audio?" for assistance).
-
Click Create and select Upload media. It will prompt you to upload your video/audio.
You completed uploading your video or audio to the folder you specified! It will take a few minutes to process before becoming viewable.
- If you uploaded to My Folder or a custom folder, you can now either embed the video/audio in a Canvas page, assignment, or discussion or share its link.
- If you uploaded to the Course Folder, you can direct students to click the Panopto link in your Canvas course's lefthand menu to access that folder and view its video/audio.
NOTE: If your video or audio file fails to upload, try compressing your file for streaming.
