Here’s how to share individual videos or audio files, or entire folders outside of Canvas.
Note: Changing sharing settings usually isn't necessary when working with video/audio in Canvas since embedding a Panopto video in Canvas using the Panopto Embed button () above any text editor makes it visible to everyone in that course.
Sharing a Video/Audio
- Access Panopto at panopto.emerson.edu. Log in with your Emerson account. This brings you to My Folder.
-
If your video/audio is not in My Folder, navigate to the folder that contains it. Hover your mouse over your video/audio and click Share.
-
Under "People and groups," you can provide access to specific people by entering their Emerson user name or email address in the "Add people and groups" box. Or, click Change under "Who can access this video" and choose a different sharing setting from the dropdown menu:
Determine which of the following sharing settings will work best for you:
Sharing Settings
RestrictedOnly people you invite to the video/audio can view it (use the "Add people and groups" box at the bottom of the Sharing Settings window).
NOTE: You can use the Restricted setting to add specific students or your entire class to a video/audio or folder. To add your entire class, select Specific People and start typing the name of your student or course (i.e., Spring 2018 - American Film Comedy VM-412-02::Viewers) into the invitation text box. It will auto-populate. Choose the option ending in Viewers (AKA students). Please note that students need to first click Panopto in your Canvas course's menu before they can access video/audio you share with the entire class.
This feature is useful if you wish to share your Panopto video/audio outside of Canvas. For example, if you don't use Canvas, you may wish to send your students directly to a Panopto folder to view video/audio instead of asking them to view video/audio embedded in Canvas. Or, you may wish to add links to Panopto videos in a PowerPoint that students can later review. Remember that if you're using the same video/audio in future classes, you'll have to add each new class to the video/audio or folder at the start of the semester.
If you're sharing video/audio with specific students, we recommend uploading them to My Folder—that way, they remain private until you share them with students of your choice.
If your class doesn’t show up, try clicking the Panopto button on your lefthand course menu at least once, then return to the sharing settings and try again.

-
When you're done adding any specific users or groups to your video/audio, click Save. Switching the sharing setting from the default Restricted setting to a different setting is saved automatically (no need to click a Save button in this case).
-
You can find your video or audio's shareable link and embed code at the top of the Sharing Settings window.
-
If you set your video/audio share settings to Anyone with the link, use the shareable link—you can email it to any student(s), and they'll have access to the video/audio.
- Use the embed code to embed your video/audio in WordPress or a similar content management system. DO NOT use this embed code in Canvas; instead, use the green Panopto Embed button () found above every text editor in Canvas. This ensures that students have access to the video/audio.
-
Sharing a Folder
Note: You cannot share My Folder, but you can share folders and video/audio stored in it.
- Access Panopto at panopto.emerson.edu. Log in with your Emerson account.
- Navigate to the folder you wish to share and click the Share button at the top right. Then follow the same steps as Sharing a video/audio.
-
Designate invitees as either those who Can create or Can view. Creators can upload to this folder and view its video/audio, while Viewers can only view content.
Viewing Shared Video/Audio and Folders
- Access Panopto at panopto.emerson.edu. Log in with your Emerson account.
- Click Shared with Me on the left-hand panel. You will see all the video/audio shared with you. Click a video to watch it (or click an audio file to listen to it).
- For folders, Under Browse > All Folders, you'll see your own folders and those shared with you.
