The following steps create a discussion that accepts video or audio submissions. Submitted video/audio can be accessed and graded via Speedgrader. The whole class can view videos/audio submitted to discussions.
Alternatively, you can create a group discussion for submissions to be viewed only within specific groups of students.
Here’s a student guide to submitting video/audio to Canvas Discussions you can share with your class.
How to Create a Discussion for Video/Audio
- Create a new discussion in Canvas by clicking Discussions in your left-hand course menu, then clicking + Discussion. Give the discussion any settings you'd like. Publish it.
- Instruct your students to navigate to the discussion and click Reply. They will then click the green Panopto-embed button () above the text entry box. In the window that appears, they will select My Folder from the dropdown menu, upload their video, and click Insert to embed it in the text entry box. Students can use this illustrated guide to submitting video/audio to Canvas discussions for more support.
That's it! Students can view each other's submissions by going to the Discussions section of the Canvas course and clicking on the discussion's title. They can use the search bar to quickly find each other's posts.
After students submit, you can use Speedgrader to view and grade your students' submissions.
Group Video/Audio Discussions
The following steps create a discussion in which only members of specific groups can see and discuss each other's video/audio.
Note
This applies to a class in which you've set up discrete groups of students in the People section of your Canvas course, and those groups need separate discussions. For a discussion in which the entire class can participate together, please use the steps above.
- Set-up student groups in your Canvas course.
- Create a Group Discussion in Canvas.
Students can add replies to their group's thread (and only their group's thread) as they would in any other discussion.
NOTE: If your video or audio file fails to upload, try compressing your file for streaming.
