Timecode & The ARRI Alexa 35: Quick Start Guide

Overview

In this guide, you will learn how to sync your timecode from the Zoom F8N to the ARRI Alexa 35.

You will need: 

  • EDC ARRI Alexa 35 - connected to power & powered on.
  • EDC Zoom F8N Field Recorder - connected to U98 Batteries & powered on.
  • EDC Denecke Smart Slate Timecode Kit - powered on with supplied AA batteries

 

Quick Start Guide

 

Prepping the ARRI Alexa 35

  1. Build & power on the ARRI Alexa 35
  2. Set up you recording settings.
    1. Insure your Recording Frame Rate & Project Frame Rate are the same
  3. Navigate to the Information screen using the upper side button on the viewfinder screen.
  4. Select the "TC" menu in the top middle of the screen. This will open Timecode Settings
  5. Select these settings:
    1. RUN MODE - Select FREE RUN
    2. MODE - Select JAM SYNC
      1. This will create a system alert on the Alexa 35 asking to sync the timecode. The "TC" on the information page will now be orange text. 

Prepping the Zoom F8N

  1. Power on & set your recording settings on the Zoom F8N
  2. Press the Menu button and select the TIMECODE menu.
  3. Select TIMECODE again.
  4. Select these settings:
    1. MODE - Int. Free Run
    2. FPS - Match to your camera frame rate

       

Jamming the ARRI Alexa 35

  1. Find the Timecode Input/Output Cable from the EDC Denecke Smart Slate Timecode Kit.
    1. It has a 5-Pin Lemo connector on one end and a two BNC connectors on then other end.
  2. Connect the 5-Pin Lemo to the ARRI Alexa 35 TIMECODE port.
    1. Make sure to carefully connect by lining up the red dots on the connector and port.
  3. Connect one BNC end to the Zoom F8N TIMECODE OUT port.
  4. Your timecode on the ARRI Alexa should now match the Zoom f8n timecode,
