EDC Gear Guides: ARRI SXU-1 Follow Focus Kit

Overview

The ARRI SXU-1 Follow Focus Kit is compact wireless follow focus kit with a ARRI cforce motor. It is well suited for gimbal, stabilizer, handheld, and tripod setups. It can be used to pull focus from a distance without extra cables and extra power sources.

Quick Start Guide 

You will need a camera build with rods, a lens with a lens gear, and a NP-FM500H battery, battery with a D-tap port.

Overview

First Steps

  • Mounting the motor to the Camera Build
    • Build your camera with rods and attach the lens. 
    • Loosen the motor clamp and slide on to the rods with the motor gear facing towards the lens.
      Needs EDC Pictures
    • Line up the teeth of the motor's gear with the teeth of the lens gear. 
    • Gently press the motor into the lens and tighten the motor clamp.

Powering On

  • Powering the Motor
    • Using the ARRI LBUS to D-Tap Power Cable, insert the LBUS side into the LBUS port on the Motor. 
      • There are small red dots on the cable and the port - line them up and gently press in until it clicks.
      • To remove the cable, pull down on the silver part.

    • Plug the D-Tap side into the battery with the D-tap port. The motor will start to flash. 
  • Powering the SXU-1 Single Axis Unit
    • Insert the NP-FM500H battery into the bottom of the SXU-1 Single Axis Unit until it clicks.
    • Press the ⏻ on the front of the SXU-1 Single Axis Unit.

Changing Radio Channels

Both the Single Axis Unit & Motor must be set to the same Radio Channel

The Single Axis Unit's channel is circled in red:

To check the channel on the motor, quickly press the lower button and
the channel number will display on the screen.

  • Changing Single Axis Unit's Radio Channel
    • Press MENU (A) and press the button below ENTER to select Radio Channel (B).                                        Screenshot 2024-06-17 at 11.07.10 AM.png
    • Use the buttons above/below UP/DOWN to scroll through the channels.
    • Once your preferred channel is selected, confirm with button below SET.

    • Exit by pressing the button above HOME.
  • Changing Motor's Radio Channel
    • Quickly press the lower button and the channel number repeatedly to scroll through the channels.
    • Stop pressing once you reach your desired channel.

Calibrating to Lens

  • Gently hold the motor against the lens during the entirety of calibration.
  • Select the CAL function by pressing button (A) directly above it.

  • It will begin calibrating.
  • It will stop once calibration is complete.

You will need to recalibrate with each lens change.

Troubleshooting

Q: It will not calibrate.
A: Check the radio channel settings on the motor & single axis unit and ensure they match.

 

Q: It repeatedly asks to Calibrate Now?

A: Calibrate and ensure the motor is securely held agains the lens. 

OR
The lens you are using is incompatible. It must have a hard stop to calibrate. 


Q: The motor keeps skipping while calibrating.

A: Ensure the motor's clamp is securely tightened on the rods and the motor is securely held against the lens during the entirety of calibration

Tips & Tricks

  • Calibrate after each lens change.
  • Do not jam the LBUS cable into the motor. It has tiny pins that can get bent if not inserted correctly.
