Overview

The Sekonic L-858D-U Cine Light Meter is a incident & reflective light meter capable of reading ambient & flash lighting. Its lumisphere head can rotate 90° right and 180° left.

It's touchscreen makes navigating the menu and selecting settings a breeze.

This light meter is a must to achieve your preferred exposure for many set up.

Quick Start Guide

You will need 2x AA batteries. *Not vended by the EDC*

First Steps

  • Inserting Batteries
    • Unlatch Battery Cover Latch (15) and remove battery cover (14.)
    • Insert the batteries following the the "+" and "–" symbols in the
      Battery Compartment(20).
    • Align the 3 tabs of the Battery Cover to the holes above the batteries of the meter. While pressing down the battery cover, use the latch to lock the battery cover.

  • Powering On
    • Press the power button near the Lumisphere

  • Choosing Incident or Reflective Methods
    • Incident measures the light falling on the subject. Position the white Lumisphere close to the subject where you want to measure the light  & in front of your light source you want to measure light.
    • Reflective measures the light being reflected off the subject. Look through the viewfinder eyepiece and center the lens on the subject. 
  • Changing Incident or Reflective Methods
    • Touch Screen

  • Measuring
    • Press the right side button to measure the light.

Operations & Modes

  • Selecting a Mode
    • Press the small square button in the top left cover of the screen.

    • Select your preferred mode (CINE [5] is a common preference)

  • Adjusting Settings in Cine Mode
    • Tap the small square button in the top left cover of the screen.
    • On the next screen, tap Cine Mode (highlighted below)Screenshot 2024-06-18 at 11.20.57 PM.png
  • Adjusting Settings to Match your Camera Settings
    • Tap on each setting and tap the up/down symbols to scroll through the options. Tap outside the options to return to the measuring screen.
    • Settings:
      • f/s = Frames Per Second
      • ISO = ISO
      • Angle = Shutter Angle
  • Once you set your settings and have pressed the measuring button the area will populate an F-Stop. This is how bright your measured light source.

Troubleshooting

Q: I am trying to use the viewfinder eyepiece but it is blurry.

A: The outer ring is a diopter. Rotate it until the numbers are in focus for your eye.


Q: When I put the light meter in my pocket, the settings change on the touch screen.

A: Press and hold the center Menu button to lock. A lock symbol will appear on the top right of the screen. Press and hold the menu button to unlock.

Tips & Tricks

  • If you don't lock the screen between measurements, be sure to double check your settings before you measure. The touch screen is sensitive and settings can easily be change by any touch.
  • When using the Incident measuring method, be sure that the lumisphere is rotated out of the light meter. Gently rotate the gear below the lumisphere to rotate it in/out.
