Three-Point Editing in Avid
Three-Point Editing is one of the most common and simple methods used when cutting together a sequence. The process uses 'in' and 'out' points to facilitate splice-in and overwrite edits.
Splice-in and Overwrite Functions
- With three points set, you can record Source clips onto the timeline by using either Splice-in or Overwrite.
- By splicing-in a clip, the clip will be inserted between existing clips in the timeline. Doing so will affect the overall duration of the selected track and the duration of the timeline as a whole.
- By overwriting a clip, the clip will be inserted over existing clips in the timeline. Doing so will not affect the overall duration of the selected track or the timeline as a whole.
1 Point in Source Monitor, 2 Points in Timeline
- Mark an ‘In’ point at the 1st frame you want to use of the clip loaded up in your source monitor. The keyboard shortcuts for an ‘in’ point are “I” or “E”
- Mark ‘In’ and ‘Out’ points in the timeline where you would like your clip to overwrite. The keyboard shortcuts for an outpoint are “O” or “R.”
- Then, use ‘overwrite’ key (keyboard shortcut “b”) or ‘splice in’ key (keyboard shortcut “V”) to lay it in your timeline.
2 points in source monitor, 1 point in timeline
- Mark ‘In’ & ‘Out’ points indicating the segment of the clip you want to lay in your timeline. The keyboard shortcuts for an ‘in’ point are “I” or “E” and the keyboard shortcuts for an outpoint are “O” or “R.”
- Mark an ‘In’ point where you would like your clip to begin in the timeline.
- Then, use ‘overwrite’ key (keyboard shortcut “b”) or ‘splice in’ key (keyboard shortcut “V”) to lay it in your timeline.
