EDC Gear Guides: Sennheiser AVX Digital Lavalier Kit

Overview

The Sennheiser AVX Digital Lavalier Kit is a wireless lavalier system that allows you to record your subject's audio with out being tethered to a recorder. Its light weight and compact nature make it easy to discreetly place on your subject. 

It is very easy to use. It automatically sets up the frequency and produces crisp and clean audio. 

It uses a receiver that connects to your recorder or compatible camera, and a transmitter with a lavalier microphone that clips to your subject.

Quick Start Guide

You will need a Sennheiser BA-20 battery & BA-30 Sennheiser battery and Recorder or Camera with XLR inputs.
(Vended separately)

Overview

First Steps

  • Inserting batteries
    • Receiver & Sennheiser BA-20 battery 
      • Slide the gold side of the battery facing down into the receiver until it clicks into place.

    • Transmitter & Sennheiser BA-A30 battery
      • Slide the gold side of the battery facing in towards into the transmitter until it clicks into place.

  • Connecting Receiver 
    • Line up the three pins on the receiver's XLR to the XLR input on your recorder or camera.
    • Gently push in.
      • The receiver can be rotated by a maximum angle of 320° around its XLR-3 connector.

  • Connecting Microphone and Transmitter
    • Connect the jack plug of the clip-on microphone to the 3.5 mm jack socket
      (Mic/Line) of the transmitter.
    • Lock the jack plug by screwing down the coupling ring.

  • Powering On & Off
    • To turn ON, press the small Red power button on the Receiver & Transmitter until the indicator lights illuminate. It is a short press.
    • To turn OFF, press the small Red power button on the Receiver & Transmitter until the indicator lights turn off. It is a long press.
  • Pairing
    • Press the Pair button on the Transmitter.
    • Once the lights flash on the Transmitter, Immediately press the Pair button on the Receiver.
    • Once paired, the lights on both the transmitter and receiver will turn green and a Paired message will appear on the transmitter.
      • It will take approximately 10 seconds to a pair.

Attaching Transmitter & Microphone to Subject

  • Attach the clip to the microphone

  • The transmitter has a clip on the back that can secure to the subject's clothing. 
    • To hide the transmitter, it is recommended you clip it to the back of subject.
  • Position the microphone about 10" / 25cm from the subject's mouth.

  • Attach the Microphone by its clip to the subject's clothing.
    • To hide the microphone, snake the wire under the subject's clothing. However - you may notice rogue sounds if the microphone rubs against fabric.

Charging Batteries

  • Both BA 20 & BA 30 batteries are charged using the supplied Micro-USB charger.
  • Each battery has a micro-usb port under a rubber cover.
  • Open the rubber cover and plug the Micro-UBS cable in to the port.
  • Plug wall plug into a wall.
  • The batteries have indicator lights. Once they turn green, they are fully charged.

Troubleshooting

Q: Transmitter and Receiver will not pair

A: The distance between the transmitter and receiver is too far. Decrease the distance. Make sure there is a direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. 

 

Q: There is no sound.

A:  The receiver is not connected properly Connect the receiver properly.

OR

The transmitter is muted. MUTED appears on the transmitter display panel and the status LED on both the receiver and the transmitter lights up yellow -  Set the Mute switch of the transmitter to the position MIC.

OR

The transmitter and the receiver are not paired, the status LED lights up red. Repair the devices properly


Q: The sound is distorted

A: The recorder or camera is set to automatically adjust levels. Change to manual level adjustment.

 

Q: The sound is very quiet/low.

A: The input sensitivity on the recorder or camera is set too low. Increase sensitivity.


Q: There is bad reception.

A: The distance between the transmitter and receiver is too far. Decrease the distance. Make sure there is a direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. 

Q: The transmitter says it needs an update.

A: Power and Pair the transmitter and receiver and let sit for about 10 minutes. It will remote update on its own. If it does not update after 30 minutes, contact the EDC for additional support.

Tips & Tricks

  • If the windscreen is detached from microphone, the entire microphone will need to be replaced. Contact the EDC for additional support.
  • If you want to further hide the microphone on your subject, you can use first aid tape or moleskin to comfortably tape it to your subject.
