Emerson's VPN, or Virtual Private Network, provides secure off-campus access to IP restricted services such as Banner. These instructions will guide you through connecting to the Emerson VPN with your:
Mac OS X
These instructions are for Mac OS X 10.7 or later. See below for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard instructions.
Configure the Emerson VPN
In System Preferences, open the Network preference pane.
Click the plus-sign at the bottom of the list of connection types and enter the following information:
Interface: VPN
VPN Type: Cisco IPSec
Service Name: Emerson VPN
Click Create.
You will now be prompted to enter additional information about this connection. Enter the following:
Server Address: vpn.emerson.edu
Account Name: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password
Click Authentication Settings...
For Shared Secret, enter emerson (all lower-case). For Group Name, type Emerson (first letter capitalized). Click OK.
Check the box next to Show VPN status in menu bar.
Click Apply.
Connect to the Emerson VPN
Now that your computer is configured, you can connect to the Emerson VPN from the VPN menu.
A timer will begin once you are successfully connected. All of your network traffic will go through the Emerson VPN while you are connected.
Once you no longer require the VPN, disconnect from it using this same menu.
Mac OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard
Mac OS X 10.6 requires a third-party utility to connect to the Emerson VPN. Begin by going to https://vpn.emerson.edu and logging in with your Emerson username and password. Click the Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent link. Open the installer package and follow the prompts to install GlobalProtect.
Configure GlobalProtect
Once GlobalProtect is installed, a globe icon will appear in your Menu Bar. This is the GlobalProtect menu. Select Show Panel from this menu. Under Settings* in this panel, enter the following:
Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password
Portal: vpn.emerson.edu
Keep Remember Me checked.
Click Apply.
* If Settings is not visible, select Advanced View from the GlobalProtect menu.
Connect with GlobalProtect
Now that you've configured GlobalProtect, any time you need to connect to the Emerson VPN, simply choose Connect from the GlobalProtect menu. The globe in the menu bar will display a shield while you are successfully connected.
When you are done using the VPN, select Disconnect from this menu.
Windows
Windows requires a third-party utility to connect to the Emerson VPN. Begin by going to https://vpn.emerson.edu and logging in with your Emerson username and password. Click the link to download the Windows GlobalProtect agent for your system type (32- or 64-bit). Open the installer package and follow the prompts to install GlobalProtect.
Configure GlobalProtect
Once GlobalProtect is installed, a globe icon will appear in your system tray. Click this icon.
Under Settings*, enter the following:
Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password
Portal: vpn.emerson.edu
Keep Remember Me checked.
Click Apply, then click OK in the next window.
* If Settings is not visible, choose View > Advanced View.
Connect with GlobalProtect
Now that you've configured GlobalProtect, any time you need to connect to the Emerson VPN, right-click on the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray and choose Connect from the context menu. The globe will display a shield while you are successfully connected.
When you are done using the VPN, select Disconnect from this menu.
iOS
Configure the Emerson VPN
Open Settings and go to General > VPN > Add VPN Configuration...
Select the IPSec button and enter the following information:
Description: Emerson VPN
Server: vpn.emerson.edu
Account: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password
Group Name: Emerson (first letter capitalized)
Secret: emerson (all lower-case)
Be sure that Off is selected under Proxy
Press Save at the top of the screen.
Connect to the Emerson VPN
Now that your device is configured, a VPN switch will appear on the main Settings screen. To connect, toggle this switch to ON.
Once you are connected, a VPN icon will appear in the status bar. All of your network traffic will go through the Emerson VPN while you are connected.
Once you no longer require the VPN, disconnect from it using this same switch.
Android
Configure the Emerson VPN
Open Settings and select More... under Wireless & Networks. Select VPN.
Press the + sign to add a new VPN connection. Enter the following information:
Name: Emerson VPN
Type: IPSec Xauth PSK
Server address: vpn.emerson.edu
IPSec identifier: Emerson (first letter capitalized)
IPSec pre-shared key: emerson (all lower-case)
Press Save.
Connect to the Emerson VPN
In Settings, under Wireless & Networks, select More... > VPN > Emerson VPN.
The first time you connect, enter the following:
Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password
Check the box next to Save account information.
Press Connect.
Any subsequent times you want to connect to the VPN, open Settings. UnderWireless & Networks, select More... > VPN > Emerson VPN and your device will connect.
Once you are connected, a VPN icon will appear in the status bar. All of your network traffic will go through the Emerson VPN while you are connected.
Once you no longer require the VPN, disconnect from it by selecting VPN Activatedfrom the device's pull-down menu, then selecting Disconnect. You can also disconnect by navigating to Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > VPN >Emerson VPN, then selecting Disconnect.
