How do I connect to the VPN?

Emerson's VPN, or Virtual Private Network, provides secure off-campus access to IP restricted services such as Banner. These instructions will guide you through connecting to the Emerson VPN with your:

Note: Accessing the VPN now requires users use two factor authentication (2FA) to login.  Unlike Gmail, Box, or SSB Banner, the VPN will not provide a visual prompt for users to choose their authentication method of choice.

If you have not used 2FA before, please log in to an application or service that currently uses it, to set it up.  See: Logging Into Box

If you have multiple devices set up for authentication, and one of them is setup for push notifications, it will always attempt to use that first.  If no devices are setup to receive push notifications, it will default to whatever your primary (or first) device is.

Mac OS X

Mac OS X requires a third-party utility to connect to the Emerson VPN. Begin by going to https://vpn.emerson.edu and logging in with your Emerson username and password. Click the Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent link. Open the installer package and follow the prompts to install GlobalProtect.

Configure GlobalProtect

Once GlobalProtect is installed, a globe icon will appear in your Menu Bar. This is the GlobalProtect menu. Select Show Panel from this menu. Under Home in this panel, enter the following:

VPN_Connection.png  Portal: vpn.emerson.edu
Click Connect.

Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password

Click Connect.

Connect with GlobalProtect

Connecting to the Emerson VPN with Global Protect in Mac OS X 10.6

Now that you've configured GlobalProtect, any time you need to connect to the Emerson VPN, simply choose Connect from the GlobalProtect menu.

At this point, users will be prompted to verify their authentication via two factor.  Please check your setup device for a push notification or phone call.

The globe in the menu bar will display a shield Global Protect Globe Icon with shield while you are successfully connected.

When you are done using the VPN, select Disconnect from this menu.


Windows

Windows requires a third-party utility to connect to the Emerson VPN. Begin by going to https://vpn.emerson.edu and logging in with your Emerson username and password. Click the link to download the Windows GlobalProtect agent for your system type (32- or 64-bit). Open the installer package and follow the prompts to install GlobalProtect.

Configure GlobalProtect

Once GlobalProtect is installed, a globe icon Global Protect Globe Icon with red X will appear in your system tray. Click this icon.

Under Home, enter the following:

Portal: vpn.emerson.edu

Click "Connect".

Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password

Click Connect.

Connect with GlobalProtect

Now that you've configured GlobalProtect, any time you need to connect to the Emerson VPN, right-click on the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray and choose Connect from the context menu.

At this point, users will be prompted to verify their authentication via two factor.  Please check your setup device for a push notification or phone call.

The globe will display a shield while you are successfully connected.

When you are done using the VPN, select Disconnect from this menu.


iOS

Configure the Emerson VPN

Open Settings and go to General > VPN > Add VPN Configuration...

Select the IPSec button and enter the following information:

Description: Emerson VPN
Server: vpn.emerson.edu
Account: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password

Group Name: Emerson (first letter capitalized)
Secret: emerson (all lower-case)

Be sure that Off is selected under Proxy

Press Save at the top of the screen.

Now that your device is configured, a VPN switch will appear on the main Settings screen. To connect, toggle this switch to ON.

At this point, users will be prompted to verify their authentication via two factor.  Please check your setup device for a push notification or phone call.

Once you are connected, a VPN icon iOS VPN connected icon from status bar will appear in the status bar. All of your network traffic will go through the Emerson VPN while you are connected.

Once you no longer require the VPN, disconnect from it using this same switch.


Android

Configure the Emerson VPN

Open Settings and select More... under Wireless & Networks. Select VPN.

Press the + sign to add a new VPN connection. Enter the following information:

Name: Emerson VPN
Type: IPSec Xauth PSK
Server address: vpn.emerson.edu
IPSec identifier: Emerson (first letter capitalized)
IPSec pre-shared key: emerson (all lower-case)

Press Save.

 

Connect to the Emerson VPN

Adding ECnet credentials to Android VPN

In Settings, under Wireless & Networks, select More... > VPN > Emerson VPN.

The first time you connect, enter the following:

Username: your Emerson username
Password: your Emerson password

Check the box next to Save account information.

Press Connect.

At this point, users will be prompted to verify their authentication via two factor.  Please check your setup device for a push notification or phone call.

Any subsequent times you want to connect to the VPN, open Settings. UnderWireless & Networks, select More... > VPN > Emerson VPN and your device will connect.

Once you are connected, a VPN icon Android VPN connected icon from status bar will appear in the status bar. All of your network traffic will go through the Emerson VPN while you are connected.

Once you no longer require the VPN, disconnect from it by selecting VPN Activatedfrom the device's pull-down menu, then selecting Disconnect. You can also disconnect by navigating to Settings > Wireless & Networks > More... > VPN >Emerson VPN, then selecting Disconnect.
